I have been playing around with the idea of making a medium scaled box about my "Dark Journey". Where this idea came from was Pinterest. I have seen some similar kind of designs and I was thinking of why not to do something like that? I also considered to do a moving image or digital design to see what it would look like.

On the 1st image, I've tried to illustrate how the box would look like. It would be around 20cm x 20cm square with top and botom part as well.

Experimenting

I've made these sketches to illustrate how I imagine the Dark Art. Basically, this is my style with fineliner and I thought they are working together very well with the white and black effect. Who inspired me a lot was Maxime Taccardi (I've been writing about hime previously) as he is one of my favourite artist. He works in a very interesting way what I love looking at. He made a few books with his illustrations and poems/esseys, that's where the idea came from to make a some kind of book even if the design isn't quite similar (which is not a problem at all).

I really enjoying drawing with line liner and making these doodle designs. The only negative point is that it takes a while to make them (not to mention how much fine liner I have to use. A lot.). Not very long time, but I am a little concerned about I will not have enough time to finish them.

I usually working with fine liner and I think this works the best in this design. I have tried the charcoal as well, but I've decided to stay with the fine liner as I can easily show to people myself with it. I also think they are working together very well with the black background.

Undercover

Cover underneath

No underneath cover

It would be useful so the paper will not get dirty.

It might give an "extra" look for the design.

As it will be a square, it should stand still, but if there's no undercover, it will lean for both sides.

It might bother the whole design.

I could fix the papers easily if there are any problems.

Paper can be demaged easily.

It might look "boring" without a undercover.

Papers could get dirty easily as well.

Top cover

Detachable top

Foldable top

It would be useful when people are "reading", it wouldn't lean back.

Harder to use, because of the strings.

Would be frustrating to put it banc all the time.

I would be afraid of losing it.

Easier to use.

The whole design would look better in this way.

It would lean back while people "reading" it.

It may break off after a while.

Experimenting

Before I've started the box design, I had been experimenting with different tools which were a nice experimenting. I did enjoy making all of them. My favourite one is the Fine liner + Paintbrush combination. In my opinion, they are working pretty well together, the alternation of dark and light and how they are look like togehter. Unfortunatley, I'm not going to use them in my design as they just couldn't fit in, escpecially that I've decided to work with only Fine liner. After all, it was a great experimentation and I also enjoyed making them.

Materials and experimenting

So, basically I was just playing around with card boards and strings to make the design I've wanted to do. In my original design I'm going to use the cardboard as the basis, because it is pretty much stable. I will going to cover it with hardcover blackpaper, so the cardboard will be "invisible" which won't going to bother the view.

I have been playing around with digital drawings. I haven't got much experience with it, so it was just a quick drawing which doesn't look very good but at least I like the way how it looks like on the video. It was a nice experience but I guess I'm going to stay with fine liner and paper. I have tried to make this video as short as I could, but this was the max as it took me more than an hour to make.

I have also created a gif just to see how would it work in this way. I pretty much like it, but it still won't be my favourite tool to play with.
